We have built our cowherd on primarily Line One Domino, UPS Domino 3027, and Keith Lapp genetics. We are seeking to build a moderate framed, low input Hereford cowherd with fertility and longevity. The rapid generational turnover in the purebred industry has been successful in improving growth and carcass traits, but has been less successful in producing durable bulls and cows with fertility and longevity. We are sourcing genetics that have shown longevity in real world environments. 39% of our cowherd traces back to a cow born in 1976 that lived until 15 and produced a top calf every year. Her appearance was very typical of the easy fleshing, big ribbed, wide rumped cow that Steve Campbell speaks of in his presentations. Another cow of similar type born in 1979 represents another 26% of the cowherd with 65% of our herd tracing back to these 2 cows on the maternal side. We are combining these cow families with proven sires like 3027 to stack in longevity and forage based performance.
A Miles City Line One Domino 2 year old heifer with a S16 782B Highland 84E bull calf. The Miles City L1 influence is adding longevity and downsizing mature size while maintaining performance. The Highland calves have shown extra thickness, rib, and pigment. This 2 year old heifer brought in a herd bull prospect in a tough year.
6 year old Line One Domino cow with a Highland 84E bull calf. We expect this cow to have a big impact on our herd. She is double bred to a 15 year old matriarch here born in 2001.
Triple bred 3027 two year old heifer with a Highland 84E daughter. She has a super udder and has done a great job with this calf while maintaining body condition in a very dry year. She is bred back to the Lapp 81R bull who was in service until 14 years. 81R's dam was flushed at 18 years of age.
Miles City Line One Domino/Britisher 3 year old cow with a UPS Mighty 7850 heifer calf. The Line One Domino/Britisher cross has made productive females and sent out some durable range bulls that have brought in repeat customers.
HL Britisher 149Y cow with a Felton 824F heifer calf. A full sib to this heifer calf was one of the top bulls from the 2021 crop. The Britisher 149Y cows have strong fertility and longevity and show up in many of the pedigrees of our better younger cows.
Line One Domino/Britisher 2 old year heifer with a fancy Highland 84E heifer calf. We don't pamper our cowherd. They have to produce and breed back with limited inputs. After many generations of selection we are seeing great results in our younger cows.
